How To Choose a Painting Contractor

You may have noticed a proliferation of service industry start-ups over the last decade, especially since the financial collapse of 2008. With all the contractors out there, it can be difficult to select a painting contractor or any contractor for that matter. People’s instinct is to pick the one with the lowest price but that shouldn’t be your only consideration. Without considering other important factors, you could end up with a job that you are not happy with or be miserable during the process.

Before making a decision be sure to ask a lot of questions and consider these critical factors.
1. How long has the contractor been in business? How long has their crew been with them?
2. Are the workers trained employees or are they casual part-time workers?
3. Does the contractor have the required licenses? Are they licensed by the State of NJ?
4. Do they have the necessary insurance and bonding for all their workers, not just a few? You want to be protected should the contractor or one of their workers become injured during the job.
5. Is the contractor a member of any painting contractor’s associations? Have they held an officer position in the association? This shows that they keep up to date with the latest in their service, e.g. finishes, techniques, etc.
6. Do they offer a written guarantee? They should provide a minimum 2 years guarantee.
7. What kind of preparation of the walls, trim, ceilings, etc., does the contractor do? Preparation is the most important part of a quality paint job.
8. What is their daily process? Do they clean-up daily so you can live in your home without mess?
9. Will they provide you with regular updates on the progress of the job?
10. Can they make recommendations on what materials will work best?

You want to select a contractor with skill and experience, who is properly licensed and insured, and that can deliver the finished job you want. They are likely not to be the lowest bid but you are ensured a high quality, clean, safe paint job that you will be able to enjoy for years to come.

Customer Testimonial
"Warren Hoffman's work is excellent, and he goes above and beyond to make sure the job is done right. We have been very pleased with with the painting he has done for us over the years in our living room, hall and stairway, bedroom and recently our kitchen and bathroom, both of which needed a lot of prep. Warren is totally reliable and pleasant to work with. We recommend him highly." - Nancy and Steve
